Seraphinite is a rare and beautiful gemstone, known for its characteristic green color and silver or white fibers that create a pattern reminiscent of angel wings.

Mineralogy:

• It is a variety of chlorite, specifically clinochlorite.
• Its chemical formula is (Mg,Fe++)5Al(Si3Al)O10(OH)8, meaning it is a hydrated magnesium, iron, and aluminum silicate. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system, with possible space groups C2/m, C2, or Cm. Its structure consists of tetrahedral and octahedral sheets.
  Its characteristic appearance is due to the fibers of the mineral that reflect light, creating an iridescent effect.
• It has a hardness of 2-4 on the Mohs scale, meaning it is relatively soft.

Appearance:

• Its color ranges from dark green to gray, with silver or white fibers that create a pattern reminiscent of feathers.
• It can sometimes appear yellowish-green or reddish-brown.

Seraphinite is mined primarily in the Lake Baikal region of Siberia, Russia.
