Old (Mastic – Sudurus)
“Mastic”, Sunturus, etc.
The term “Mastic” or “Sudurus” describes kompolois with a charming history and unique characteristics. Their manufacture flourished from 1880 to 1940, mainly in Arab countries. Their composition, based on mastic powder, incense powder, amber powder and bakelite, mixed with turpentine, created kompolois with special properties.
Sunturus are usually found in shades of yellow, ochre, brown and orange. Sometimes they are decorated with pyrographed religious symbols, such as eyes, crosses or other motifs that were probably related to religious beliefs.
In addition to their aesthetic value, Sudurus also have practical advantages. Their sound, clean and clear, offers a pleasant feeling when rotating them. The variety of sizes covers every taste and need, making them ideal for men and women.
Their durability and reliability in daily use played a decisive role in their widespread use. Today, Sudurus are among the most beloved kompolois in Greece, bringing back memories of a bygone era and offering an aesthetic and practical experience to their lovers.
The charm of the Sudurus lies in their history, aesthetics and practicality. Combining memories from the past with a pleasant experience of use, Sudurus maintain a firm place in the tradition of kompolois, touching the hearts of their fans throughout Greece.
The age and limited production of these kompolois makes them rare and valuable. Many of us have acquired them from older generations or from collectors. That is why there is no longer the variety of sizes and colors that existed in the past.
Due to the increasing demand for this type of komboloi, modern komboloi have appeared on the market, made based on the original materials, which are often presented as old, in order to increase their commercial value. Their similarity to the original old ones often misleads collectors, making it difficult to identify genuine pieces.
